What's the Difference Between Bouldering / Top Rope / Lead Climbing?

Bouldering is climbing up to 15ft (in gym) off the ground without the use of ropes or climbing gear. Pads are provided throughout the bouldering areas and participation in a Safety Orientation is required prior to climbing. This type of climbing is available to climbers of any skill level and does not require a partner.

Top Roping is climbing up to 50ft (in gym) on a rope that is already attached to the top of the wall while being belayed by a certified partner below. This type of climbing is available to climbers of any skill level and requires a partner(s). Belay certification is required prior to climbing. Belay Classes are offered daily, visit a location’s “classes” page for more information or to sign up.

Lead Climbing refers to climbing on our full height walls in areas that do not already have a rope attached at the top. Unlike Top Roping, Lead climbers must bring the rope with them as they progress up the wall. Leading is an advanced form of climbing and not recommended until you have a strong Top Rope climbing foundation. Lead Certification is required prior to leading in our gyms. Classes are offered several times a month at our rope gyms, please review the requirements prior to signing up for this class on a location’s “classes” page.

  • Please note:
    • Momentum Lehi, SODO, and Silver Street are Bouldering Only gyms.
Momentum Millcreek, Sandy, and Katy offer both Rope Climbing and Bouldering.
    • We do not allow anyone other than Momentum employees to provide belay instruction inside our gyms.

WHAT TO EXPECT

  • All visitors are required to fill out a waiver, including spectators.

  • Rope Climbers must be belay certified prior to climbing.

    • If you know how to belay, visit the Front Desk to get certified.

    • If you do not know how to belay, sign up for our Learn To Belay Class!

  • Lead Climbing requires a 35meter rope, certification, and ability to climb a 5.10 test route.

  • Exercise equipment use is first come first serve.

  • Climbing Shoes, Harness, and Belay Device rentals available at Front Desk.

    • We do not provide or rent out lead ropes.

I have always like momentum. Except of course the price, they charge way to much. But I went to the front climbing gym in ogden and they had the worst customer service and were really horrible.Momentum in sandy has always been great. They make sure we have fun and they are safe and have great service.

I'm an experienced climber of 30 years and I have worked in gyms climbing gyms in the past. I have visited climbing gyms across the country and this is one of the the best I've been to. It is definitely by far the best gym in the South Southwest United States. Established by experienced folks from Utah, they really know their craft and put together a world class gym. The routes are consistent and challenging. They have climbs for all ability levels and at all different heights. It's perfect for young children, families, beginners as well as advanced and intermediate, even pro climbers. They have bouldering, self-belay, top rope, and huge lead climbing walls. Their staff is friendly helpful and considerate. You can tell they love working there.

Gym pretty average for climbing, decent space, very busy, but how many months does it take to renovate the bathrooms? I joined in November, now three months later they are still out. The one indoor restroom smells like urine and the outdoor portable restrooms are not accessible friendly as proven by my daughter falling down the stairs today. Nice scrap from eye to nose.

Update: the gift card they gave instead of the refund was empty. The employee gave an empty gift card to get us to leave!DO NOT GO HERE, this gym is the most unwelcoming gym i have ever been to. I've been climbing all over utah at different gyms and i took some friends climbing today who are new to climbing, when we go in i have to show them how to belay before they take the test, after about 5 minutes they knew how to belay really well and when we went to take the test the guy at the front desk said we are not all to climb and not allowed to take the test because i showed them how to belay and they will need to take the $35 HOUR long class on just how to belay. After they said we are now allowed to climb (just because i showed my friends) i asked for a refund and they were not able to refund me and made me get a gift card instead, later when i asked about where it says in the rules and he just pointed to this very small poster And said its on here. NO WHERE in this poster does it say that if you show someone how to belay it means you cant climb. This gym is the most UNWELCOMING CLIMBING GYM IN UTAH. The gym in leghi is much much better but this one is absolutely terrible.

First bouldering in USA🇺🇸. If you register at the entrance, just give your name at the counter. Of course, you can also rent shoes and harnesses. After that, you can do whatever you want. There are routes of various levels, and each person has their own strategy. It's fun to do it yourself and watch others do it.

Customer service VERY rough it was my first time there I had so many questions if it's your first time I wouldn't start here without someone you know it's like a barrier to entry here. I wouldn't be surprised if this place will eventually struggle. Anyways yesterday was Veterans Day, I didn't feel comfortable and they let a lot of people cut in front of us I wouldn't have stayed if it wasn't for a friend. HONESTLY I just didn't feel very welcomed there. I mean no one said anything about where I sign a waiver and stuff. This is my review of momentum and how I feel about it. Anyways this review kinda sucks. The equipment and walls for climbing were awesome though.

Wow! What a great experience. Im visiting from Canada and my friend took me here to try rock climbing. It was my first time ever and now I feel like Im addicted. Great atmosphere, everyone is friendly. There was someone who walked by and asked for us not to take photos as you need 2 hands on the rope at all times. We were not told this earlier in the day but I really appreciate that staff member saying something. She was kind enough and took photos for us. We also did a hour lesson with Levi and he was awesome. I kept getting confused with something and he would help remind me or fix any issues I had. He was also kind enough to take photos/videos for us as well. He was also really nice. This place is great for all ages in my opinion. I like that they had a kid section as well. Thank you for a great start to my vacation!

I want to love this place, but the youth classes make climbing here a nightmare. Not because there’s tons of kids (which there are), but because the kids are not taught any gym etiquette and the staff members assigned to watch over them do not step in to keep youth or adult climbers safe. I’ve had kids start routes I was already halfway up, or start routes that intersect with the one I’m on. They also try routes over and over without stepping away from the wall to let other climbers try routes in that area. The Sandy bouldering area is much smaller than other locations staff members really need to teach and enforce rules with the youth classes. I’m finding myself rearranging my schedule or driving an extra half hour to the Lehi or Millcreek location to avoid climbing in Sandy during kids classes.

The gym is great and all, but the kids not being watched over is truly a pain. Every so often, there’s young children playing around right under me when I’m bouldering. I almost severely injured a child once because I slipped while climbing. I’m 180lbs and I don’t think the injury would be light if I fell on top of a 7 year old.

Fun friendly atmosphere, the route setting is fun and challenging. Sandy Momentum is one of my favorite places to be.EXCEPT THIS ONE TIME I BROUGHT MY TOY DINOSAURS TO THE GYM AND ASKED THE FRONT DESK STAFF IF THEY WANTED TO PLAY DINOSAURS WITH ME. THIS ONE GIRL THERE SAID NO. WHICH IS FINE, SHE DOESN’T NEED TO PLAY DINOSAURS WITH ME. BUT THEN SHE TAKES OUT HER OWN DINOSAUR FROM BEHIND THE DESK AND PROCCEDS TO PLAY DINOSAURS AT THE OTHER END OF THE DESK WITHOUT ME. GRANTED HER DINOSAUR WAS OF A HIGHER QUALITY AND MUCH COOLER THAN MINE. I JUST THOUGHT THAT WAS EXTEMELY RUDE…Jokes on her I went in early the next day and stole her dinosaur and I’m not sure I’m going to give it back…Other than that one experience Sandy Momentum is the best. One time the management even offered to get me a membership at another gym

It gets pretty packed here. The available routes are pretty varied, and the ceilings are tall. Nearly all of the staff I've interacted with have been pretty cool. But nothing really shouts '5 stars' to me. The membership is more than double what I paid at my last gym, but it comes with yoga classes and stuff so I guess I get more for my buck. (Maybe unfortunately?) this is probably the best gym to climb at in the valley. A million times better than The Front anyway.

Awesome climbing gym but the staff makes the world of difference. I have a special needs son who climbs with me all the time... this guy(sorry i dont remember his name) always excitedly greets my son by name and will sometimes hang out and chat with him. I know hes just being a good person but it means the world to me and my son... give this guy a raise... hes representing your brand sooooo well.

The Sandy Momentum Climbing gym is top notch. Everyone who works here is knowledgeable, approachable, and personable. The gym is always clean. The route setting is creative and challenging, from boulders to sport routes. I feel comfy asking the setters for beta and requesting types of climbs I love. I love Sandy's weightlifting area; it's organized really well. This gym is managed beautifully. I feel very lucky to be a member here. 🙂

This is the best Momentum in Utah. Routes are cycled regularly, facility is always clean, cold, and well ventilated as well. If you go to any momentum to boulder, this is the best one. A large variety of routes to choose from and extremely spacious. I started climbing at this gym last year. I fell and broke my foot, my fault. Staff was kind and helped my partner carry me to the car. So I went back after healing and have continued going. Only wished I lived closer. I typically go to the sandy gym which pales in comparison to the Lehi gym.

Took my kids and some of their friends, (10-15 yrs old) pretty much all of us are beginners. They were very patient with my kids and made sure we all understood how to belay properly during our class. There is a large range of course difficulty, some well beyond impossible for us, but we enjoyed the easier climbs and watching people more expert than us with the more challenging ones.

Me and my boyfriend (very first time “climbers”) tried out a belay class this past weekend and the instructor was great and we had so much fun, even stayed an hour or so after the class, we decided to get a 2 week trial. We go back tonight and are told we have to test belay again so we go along with it.. the employee with brown hair was extremely condescending the whole time, expecting us to know “her ways” and got rude when we didn’t learn the way she likes. She made it so we didn’t even want to stay and we just wanted to leave after. Worst experience ever. When someone is new at something it’s nice to have someone teach you and be patient and not act like a brat. It’s nice to have someone be understanding and patient. So thank you to the employee who ruined the whole experience for me! ??

Today, I had the worse customer service at the front desk. I went with my sister-in- law who is deaf and my brother-in-law and cousin and we were pretty excited to go climbing. Unfortunately, Stephanie was very condescending and she said that they did not have instructors to explain how to do rope-climbing. She explained me twice how to do it and after that She said that She had explained me too many times, therefore, She could not let us do the rope climbing and that We could go back another day. I asked her when there were classes available and she said I could look it online. I think they should train their stuff better, so they don’t treat new customers like they are stupid.

Love this place but they’re letting it go. The shower facilities are worse than your high school locker room. Light bulbs out everywhere. Outlets with exposed wiring. Rat poison in the corner. I found a screw on the floor of the shower recently. Tried bringing it up to the staff. Emailed the manager. No response. No changes. The climbing is fun but the facilities are so neglected. Sad. Used to love it here. Been coming for four years.

One of the best climbing gyms around! This gym offers a good amount of walls of different ability levels, and is great to take people to learn how to climb. I loved my time climbing here! I'm not huge into climbing so I cancelled my membership because I wasn't going often enough to make it worth it, but that's on my own self interest! I'd go back on a buddy pass or a day pass every once in a while just to experience climbing again!

Went to the sandy location for the first time today. Not super busy from 1-3 on a Sunday which was nice. Belay tests were a joke, safety does not seem to be the top priority there, but sometimes that's better than the places that grill you every time like it's your first time. My daughter is 9, she enjoys the bouldering (they have kid specific areas) and some of the easy top rope routes, but at 55lbs, trying to lower her is almost impossible on some of the ropes because there's a lot of friction built in to the systems (this is generally a good thing, especially if you're belaying someone heavier than yourself). I'd give it 5 stars, but the walls look a bit beat up from the lead climb draws, and several areas that are for crack climbing didn't seem to get any use, which is a shame.

I’ve been coming to this gym for years and all in all the experience has been a positive one. The routes are fun and creatively set and the staff are usually friendly. However, the gym could definitely be cleaner. They claim to be doing increased cleanings and I’ve never seen it. The weight area is definitely the dirtiest and it’s the only gym I’ve ever been to where staff doesn’t periodically wipe down equipment. Also the gym is always incredibly busy, it can be hard to find any room to boulder on weekdays after 5 until close. I’m not going to rate negatively because of it, climbing is just a really popular sport in Utah. I do wish the gym would stop marketing so hard, y’all have enough people in there already!

We are doing the 2 week free trial. It isn't really free but discounted. It includes all you need shoes, belay & chalk too. So a little misleading but it is $39 for 2 weeks and that includes 2 free classes that are normally $59 each class. My girls feel confidant in belaying in just one day of training. I do not think we will pay the monthly fee because it is so pricey but $39 for 2 weeks is worth it ?

Somehow Momentum manages to remove my reviews.Regardless, I’ll continue to love Momentum, except for the way the team coaches, especially one in particular who’s name starts with a P and rhymes with calmer, conduct themselves and control their teams. I have personally witnessed P-calmer encourage team kids to cut in front of other patrons, and have them do 4x4s on routes that countless others are trying to have fun on. I have even had a swarm of children under team rule bombard me on the fitness deck and all push push me away from the hang board I was STANDING UNDER AND USING. Another time I was stepped on while having a stretch. Neither time did I receive an excuse me or an apology.Wonderful cracks, decent fitness deck, great setting (especially Jakes routes,) and good hours. Just cannot complain enough about the way the youth teams and their leaders behave.Teach etiquette and manners and these feelings that radiate to others than myself, can be rescinded. Will post continuously until my post stop being deleted or the problem is resolved. Whichever is the latter.

The GM at Sandy doesn't appear to be a good GM. I believe his name is Eric. His customer service skills are poor and all he seems to care about is the bottom line/his bonus/money. He does not care about me as a member of his gym. Also he does not seem to train his employees well. I saw him interact with a customer trying to figure out a course for some younger students and he just seemed money focused and did not want to try to help this group out. I get it, it's a business, but you don't necessarily need to show those business cards to your customers. There is a way to talk to customers and not be money centric. My personal experience with him also was not great. I was told by one of his employees that I could sign up for two - two week trial memberships. I was signed up for the first and when I tried to sign up for the second he was the one "helping me". He said I could not do that. I understood that that was the policy but when I previously asked if that was allowed and told yes, I felt that he should have made an exception. He did not. He did not even apologize. He just said that he would correct his employee. The funny part is that I went back and a friend got a second two week trial and then I decided to do the same. So on top of everything, he must not be training his team on what the policy is. So I just think he is a horrible GM. Mainly because he did not handle those two experiences with good customer service.

Hey I am member here and I love Sandy momentum. You really need to pay attention on kids. I usually only do boulder. There are so many cute kids jump, roll over and run fast, chase after each other. I have to very careful when I do boulder, if I drop, I might hit them. I like kids but I don’t want them stay in the area where I can drop. You need to provide tutorial and instructions for those fist time visitors !!! I think they are not mean to it but it’s super dangerous. Although they all sign the waiver but still you should do your job to educate kids in order to avoid accident!

I’m just getting into climbing and momentum is super nice cause I can do all the climbing I want. Quality is great and everyone is super friendly. As someone who also has a vasa membership it is really nice to implement climbing into my workout split so that I can get stronger even faster. I think the only “downside” to that it is a smaller gym and it can get crowded in the evenings. Other than that it’s great!

We did an introduction to belay and the instruction was great and the support was wonderful! She (I wish I remembered her name because she was terrific, 6p Sandy 10/14) spent time with us to teach and get us to a point of feeling comfortable. What a great way to start to learn and introduction to the facility!

I can't say enough good about this place. Jeff taught us our belay class. He was great everyone is so positive and helpful. Staff and clients. Week with it team building for my boys, great exercise and confidence boosting. I don't think I'd be able to get back into to climbing, but they made it possible!

I'm very happy rock climbing here. The people are always super friendly, most give advice (beta) and hype you up, and you can sleep easily make friends. The co-workers too.I only had one bad experience with Ryan, I taught my friends how to belay and all to pass the test, they struggled a little bit, and Ryan instead of helping them out a bit just lost his patience, took away our ropes in the test and walked away saying "your lives are on your hands". Couldve been kinder about it is all, maybe he had a bad day, but I really appreciate everyone else who is friendly and clearly loves rock climbing with a passion! Great place, I've made many friends, and I've only been coming for 4 weeks(Take the 2 week free trial if you can, you can use it twice, and it's the price of a day pass)

Friendly staff. Different locations, plenty of variety in climbing and fair price. Yoga too. Annnnnd they follow CDC guidelines, which means masks off June 1st! Other climbing gyms aren't even talking about it yet.
