Getting Started

Before You Climb

All climbers must have a current Release of Liability Form (Waiver) to enter the climbing area at Momentum.  If you are under 18 years of age, your Waiver must be signed by a parent or documented legal guardian.  The Waiver can be completed online ahead of time or during your first visit to the gym.  Once you have a Waiver on file with us, it is valid at all Momentum locations.

Click “Waiver” in the menu to the left to print out a Waiver or submit one electronically.

New Climber

Three exciting ways for new climbers to explore the vertical world!

Bouldering

Bouldering involves climbing without a rope on a shorter wall, at heights of approximately 12 to 15 feet.  Bouldering is a great activity whether you are in a group or alone. Our bouldering areas are available at any time; simply purchase admission to the gym and get started with a brief safety orientation!  If you are looking for a last minute activity, bouldering is a great option!

Bouldering is dangerous:  You will fall, and when you fall, you will land on the ground. Please review all posted rules, safety information, and consult a staff member before beginning your bouldering session.

Top Rope Climbing

This is how many new climbers ‘learn the ropes’. Top roping is a partner activity in which one person ties into thier harness on one end of a rope and climbs while the other person holds the other end of the rope using a belay device and belays the climber. Top rope belaying includes pulling the slack up as the climber ascends, catching any falls the climber may take, and lowering the climber back down to the ground when they are done. This basic safety skill is taught through a variety of instructional opportunities which you can explore below.

Top Rope Belay Certification

Available at Sandy & Millcreek locations!

All customers wishing to use the rope climbing areas of the gym must be certified by a staff member before they can belay another climber. Belayers must be age 12 or older. Climbers may not teach their friends how to belay.

If you have belayed before, you can demonstrate your skills during a Top Rope Belay Test. Top Rope Belay Tests are offered free of charge during all open hours. However, you must take your Tope Rope Belay Test immediately upon your arrival to the gym if you wish to obtain certification.

During a Top Rope Belay Test, you will be asked to correctly tie-in as a climber and to demonstrate proper belaying technique without assistance from gym staff or your climbing partner. If you pass the Top Rope Belay Test, you are allowed to belay other climbers at Momentum.  If you fail to pass your Top Rope Belay Test, you may try again at your next visit.

Learn to Belay: To receive belay instruction, we highly recommend enrolling in our Experience Momentum Class or stopping by the gym during a Walk-In Belay Instruction period. Belay instruction is included during the price of admission during Walk-In Belay Instruction periods only.

Lead Belay & Lead Climb Certification

Available at Sandy & Millcreek locations!

In order to obtain lead belay or lead climb certification at Momentum, climbers must have prior lead climbing experience and are required to demonstrate lead belaying and lead climbing proficiency during a lead test with a Momentum staff member. Upon successful completion of a lead belay or lead climbing test, climbers will receive a harness tag and are able to climb in all areas of the gym at any Momentum Indoor Climbing facility.

Lead tests are available on a first-come first-served basis, during weekdays after Noon and all day on weekends. To take a lead test, you will need your own rope and a partner. Prior lead climbing experience is required.

During the lead test, you’ll be required to climb on steep terrain (~5.10a) that you are unfamiliar with and take a small fall. We’ll watch your clipping, footwork, and climbing technique. We will also watch you lead belay for your partner and make sure that you demonstrate safe and proper techniques while belaying and catching your partner.

Grab the Sharp End! If you have not lead climbed before but would like to learn, we highly recommend enrolling in our Lead Climbing Class. Our skilled instructors will teach you proper rope management, clipping techniques, and give you all the tools to safely belay a lead climber.
